How To Use Find My iPhone
Posted: Jul 18 2014
Find My iPhone is a free app which lets you locate your smartphone or tablet when it's connected to the internet.
How To Use It
Step 1: Enable the Find My iPhone option. You can find this under the iCloud menu in the Settings app.
Step 2: Set a passcode by going to the General section in Settings, and select Passcode Lock.
Step 3: Select Restrictions (Found in the General section) and then Enable Restrictions. You will be asked to set another passcode to do this.
Step 4: Scroll down and select Location Services, and then scroll downwards until you see Find My iPhone. Make sure Find My iPhone is set to ON and that Status Bar Icon is set to OFF. This prevents anybody knowing that you're tracking the phone's location using the app.
Step 5: To complete the process, tap the back button (Titled Location Services) and then scroll back to the top and select Don't Allow Changes. This means no individual can change the settings without entering the passcode.
Step 6: Finally, go to the App Store and search for Find My iPhone. Choose to download the app and enter your password when prompted, and the app will start to install.
Using The App
Step 1: Open Find My iPhone, and log in.
Step 2: The app will now attempt to locate your devices which are connected to that specific Apple ID. A list of devices should appear. If the device isn't connected to the internet it will be shown as offline.
Step 3: When you tap on a device that has a green circle next to it, this will show its location on the map. A smaller circle means the location is fairly accurate, whereas, a bigger circle means its position is uncertain.
Step 4: When your device is highlighted on the map, hit the blue arrow to show the options to play a sound, enable Lost Mode and erase the iPhone.
- By tapping Play Sound will make the device play a sound, and should mean you can track down your iPhone or iPad if it's close enough. The screen will also display a message: Find My iPhone Alert (or Find My iPad Alert).
- By tapping Lost Mode requires you to enter a phone number, which anyone finding the iPhone or iPad will see on the screen when they press the sleep/wake button.
- When you Tap Erase iPhone, it will wipe all your content and settings, and will prevent you using Find My iPhone to locate or track the device.
NOTE: You don't have to use the app to track your device: you can go to www.icloud.com on any computer, log in with your Apple ID and click the Find My iPhone icon to access the same functions.
WARNING: If you find out your iPhone or iPad has been stolen, it's best to give any location to the police rather than trying to recover it yourself.
