iPhones have a simple little trick to help solve this.
Once in a photo album, press 'Select' in the top right corner. This then allows you to select as many photos as you choose.
If you then touch a photo and slide your finger across (without lifting your finger) you can select photos by dragging vertically and horizontally, making things a lot quicker and easier!
