With over 1 billion people using WhatsApp, it is now rivalling the standard text message for popularity. Many simply use WhatsApp to send text messages and pictures to each other, however, there are many helpful features you may be missing out on to make your WhatsApp experience even better! Most of the hacks below are for both Apple and Android users, and when we talk about settings, we're talking about the settings within your WhatsApp app!
1. Get Rid Of The 'Read' Blue Ticks -
To remove the blue ticks that indicate you have read a message from your WhatsApp contact simply follow these steps:
Settings> Account > Privacy > Read Receipts > Switch To Off
2. Read Messages Without Being Seen -
Similar to before, if you want to read WhatsApp chat messages without being seen but don't want to get rid of the blue ticks altogether, then there is another option.
Before you open the WhatsApp chat put your mobile phone into airplane mode and the view the message, this is mean no alert will be sent to the other person. After you have read the message, leave the chat and turn off airplane mode and it will be like you were never there.
3. Turn Off Last Seen Status -
If you would rather your WhatsApp contact didn't see when you were last online you can turn this off by following these instructions.
Settings > Account > Privacy > Last Seen
4. Change Style Of Text -
Bold Text - Put an asterisk on either side of the word - *example*
Italic Text - Put an underscore on either side of a word, for example - _example_
* You can even combine both text types like this = *_example_*
5. WhatsApp For Mac Or Windows PC -
You can now use WhatsApp on your Apple Mac or Windows PC by either heading over to the WhatsApp web website (you'll need to scan the QR code from your phone) or downloading the program directly from here.
6. Icon For Specific Chats On Phone Home screen (Android Only) -
Press down on the contact you want to make a shortcut for, when the contact is highlighted, press on the 3 dots found on the top right-hand side of the screen and select add chat shortcut, this will now create a shortcut of the chat on your home screen.
7. Change Pop Up Settings -
If you don't want others seeing the full WhatsApp message on your lock screen alert, you can now tell your WhatsApp to only display pops up when you want or not at all by following these steps:
Android- Settings > Notifications > Popup Notifications > Choose From No Popup, Only When Screen Is On, Only When Screen Is Off or Always Show Popups.
iOS- Settings > Notifications > In-App Notifications > Choose from none, banners, alerts and whether you want the sounds and vibrate on.
8. Save Messages & Backup WhatsApp Data -
If you're worried about losing your WhatsApp message data or your changing phone and would like to switch it over, this can easily be done thanks to iCloud and Google Drive.
To backup your WhatsApp data simply follow these steps. From here you can backup your data on either a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
Settings > Chats > Chat Backup
9. Make Important Messages Easy To Find -
There are a few handy tools to search through all your WhatsApp messages so you don't have to scroll through them all!
Android- Press down the message and at the top select the star icon. To find your starred messages, Press on the 3 dots found on the top right-hand side of the screen > Select starred messages option.
iOS- Press down the message and at the top select the star icon. To find your starred messages, just go into Settings > Starred Messages.
When on the main WhatsApp chat page, you can also find a search bar by pulling the page down when you're at the top. This will allow you to search through all of your WhatsApp chat messages.
10. See Exactly When Your Message Was Read -
When in a group chat, you can only see the blue ticks when everyone has read your message, however, there is a way to see who has read your message, and when they read it.
Android- Simply press down on the message you have sent and select the info icon.
iOS- Swipe the message you've sent to the left of the screen.
11. Mark As Unread (Android Only) -
If there's a chat you have already read but want to mark it as unread so you can revisit it late, all you have to do is...
Go to your contact list > Press down on the contact that has the message until it is highlighted > Press on the 3 dotted icon found on the top right hand corner > Select mark as unread.
12. Change Your WhatsApp Number -
If you have a new phone number but decided to keep your old mobile phone then you will need to let WhatsApp know about this change to ensure it works correctly. You can do this by going to Settings > Account > Change Number > Then simply go through the WhatsApp set up the walkthrough.
13. Prevent Automatic Downloading -
To save on storage and to prevent your WhatsApp from downloading everything automatically you can turn this off by following these steps...
Android- Settings > Data Usage > When Using Mobile Data - From here you can pick and choose what you would like your phone to automatically download, such as photos, audio, videos and documents.
iOS- Settings > Chats > Save to camera roll > Turn off.
14. Get Siri To Read And Send WhatsApp Messages (iOS Only) -
Good news for Apple users, it is now possible for them to get Siri to read their last WhatsApp message or even send a new WhatsApp message by following these instructions;
Get WhatsApp To Read The Last Message > "Hey Siri, read my last WhatsApp message"
Get WhatsApp To Send New Message > "Hey Siri, send a WhatsApp message to [contact]"
15. Send A Message To All Your Friends At Once -
If you have an important message you want to send to a large number of your WhatsApp contacts at once without creating a specific chat group then all you have to do is use the broadcast feature.
Android - Go to the main WhatsApp chat screen > In the top right-hand corner click on the 3 dotted icon > Select New Broadcast. From here you can pick and choose which contacts get the message.
Apple- Go to the main WhatsApp chat screen > Click on Broadcast Lists on the top left-hand corner > Create a broadcast list.
16. Share Your Location -
If you're meeting up with someone or just want to show someone your current location you can send a pin of your location!
Android- Go on the specific chat > Click on the paperclip icon which can be found next to the type a message section > Click on the location icon.
iOS- Go to the specific chat > Click on the plus icon in the bottom left-hand side of your chat > Select location.
17. Change WhatsApp Wallpapers -
To change the wallpapers on your WhatsApp screens all you have to do is follow these steps:
Android- Click On 3 Dotted Icon On Chat Home screen > Settings > Chats > Wallpaper
iOS- Settings > Chats > Chat wallpaper
18. Edit WhatsApp Picture Messages -
Before you send a picture to one of your WhatsApp contacts, you can now edit it in various different ways.
Android- Go on specific WhatsApp chat > Press on the camera icon found next to the Type a message section > From here you can either take a new picture or scroll through your pictures and select one > Once you have taken or selected a picture to send, you will see 4 icons on the top right-hand side of the screen.
iOS- Go on specific WhatsApp chat > Press on the plus icon found next to the Type a message section, select Photo & Video Library and choose a photo or Take a photo by clicking the camera icon on the bottom right-hand side > Once you have taken or selected a picture to send, you will see 4 icons on the top right-hand side of the screen.
Adjust Tool - Change the size of the image or rotate.
Emoji Tool - Add emojis.
Text Tool - Add text.
Pencil Tool - Scribble on your screen. (Top tip- dragging your finger to the bottom when choosing a colour will enable the pixel pencil tool)
19. Block WhatsApp Contacts -
Has one of your WhatsApp contacts annoyed you so much you want to block them? Well now you can by following these instructions
Tap the conversation by the person you want to block > Tap the header of the conversations (where it says their name or number) > Tap Block this Contact.
20. Set An Event Reminder Directly From WhatsApp (iOS Users Only) -
If you get an invite to an event with dates (including terms like tomorrow) and the venue via your WhatsApp chat it will automatically get highlighted and underlined. From here you can press on the date and you will be redirected to the calendar app where you can create an event reminder.
21. Don’t Let Everyone See Your WhatsApp Stories & Statues -
Thanks to WhatsApp settings, you can now pick and choose which contacts see your WhatsApp status and stories.
Andriod- Click On 3 Dotted Icon Found On Chat Home screen > Settings > Account > Privacy >Status
iOS- Settings > Account > Privacy
22. Mute Certain Chat Notifications -
If there's a certain WhatsApp chat that is driving you crazy with notifications then you can mute this group by going into the chat and pressing on the name at the top of the screen which will open the message settings. When this menu appears, you can select how long you want the mute on for, this could be anything from 8 hours to 1 year. You can always see how many messages are in this chat by going on main WhatsApp chat page.
